Toyota has recently launched a diesel mild-hybrid version of the Fortuner in South Africa. Now, there are reports suggesting that this variant might hit the Indian market later this year. Internationally, it’s offered with a diesel automatic version, but in India, Toyota might offer both manual and automatic versions. This hybrid system, paired with a 2.8-liter turbocharged engine, aims to improve low-end torque and fuel efficiency.
The hybrid Fortuner features a 48V electric motor replacing the alternator, along with a DC-DC converter and a 48V battery pack. The electric motor charges the battery while the vehicle is in motion or decelerating. When charged, the battery provides power to assist the engine at lower RPMs and speeds, enhancing driveability and fuel economy. The system also includes an Idle Start/Stop feature for city driving.
The international version offers both 2WD and 4×4 variants with mild-hybrid tech. Initially introduced in the Hilux pickup truck, this technology provides a power boost of 16 PS and 65 Nm of torque. Toyota may also consider updating the Indian version with additional features like the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS Suite and 360-degree camera, especially with competitors like Ford rumored to re-enter the Indian market with models like the Everest.

With the potential for more features and the introduction of the mild-hybrid variant, Toyota aims to maintain its position in the Indian SUV market.
