The Tata Curvv, despite its unconventional coupe-SUV design, is set to make a strong impact in the midsize SUV segment. Tata Motors has launched the Curvv with two EV powertrain options, two petrol engines, and a diesel engine, with a CNG version also under consideration.
At the Curvv’s launch, Tata Motors Managing Director Shailesh Chandra told Autocar India that a CNG version is being actively considered. “While designing the car, we have ensured it can accommodate CNG. Although it’s too early to confirm a launch, I can say it’s under active consideration,” Chandra stated.
The CNG option would be paired with the 1.2-liter turbo-petrol engine, not the new direct injection 1.2-liter turbo. This engine is also used in the Nexon, and a CNG concept was displayed at the Bharat Mobility Show. The CNG Nexon is anticipated to launch by early 2025.
Tata Motors has been open to offering CNG in higher segment models and trims, and they have previously highlighted their role in the ‘premiumisation of CNG’. With the Grand Vitara and Hyryder already offering CNG powertrains in the midsize SUV segment, Chandra mentioned, “We are seeing others in this segment with CNG, so there is interest.”
Curvv EV Could Account for 30 Percent of Total Sales
Regarding the Curvv EV, Chandra is optimistic that more mainstream buyers will opt for the EV version. “I am confident that with the price parity we have with other petrol automatics and a real-world range of over 400 km, we will see strong demand for the Curvv EV.” However, he did not provide specific sales targets, referring to it as a ‘discovery phase’. He suggested that the Curvv EV’s sales could “range from 15 to even 30 percent.”
The prices for the ICE versions of the Curvv will be released on September 2, with expectations for a very competitive pricing structure. With the potential addition of a CNG variant, the Curvv would be the only model in the midsize SUV segment to offer four fuel options, making it interesting to see how total sales volumes and model mix develop.
