Pune Porsche Accident : IAS Officer issues transfer of Pune Police commissioner

In the aftermath of the Porsche car crash that has reverberated nationwide, retired IAS officer Arun Bhatia has penned a letter to the Chairman of the Maharashtra Human Rights Commission (MHRC), advocating for the transfer of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. Bhatia has urged the MHRC to scrutinize Kumar’s conduct, claiming he represents the city’s police force.

Bhatia also called for an investigation into the appointment of a doctor as Chief Medical Officer, purportedly influenced by a politician’s recommendation, and demanded the Health Secretary be held accountable. Additionally, Bhatia requested a detailed report on the investigation’s delays and lapses, insisting this information be made public immediately. He expressed distrust in the current Police Commissioner to fulfill this task.

Accusing Kumar of shielding criminal activities and corrupt officials, Bhatia highlighted an incident where a reporter was mishandled by a police officer, as seen on television. He also pointed out inconsistencies in Kumar’s statements regarding political pressure in the case, mentioning the presence of two politicians at the police station. Bhatia criticized the court’s decision to grant bail to the seventeen-year-old involved in the crash, instead of placing him in a remand home.

He also suggested that Police Commissioner Kumar take leave to ensure an unbiased investigation into the case.
