Police have launched a nationwide campaign to fine cars with aftermarket bright LEDs

Since July 1, Bengaluru police have booked nearly 4,000 vehicles for violating headlight regulations, targeting those with glaring LED headlights. This initiative is part of a statewide campaign to reduce the use of harsh lights. “We are focusing on vehicles with LED headlights that are excessively bright and dazzling,” stated Alok Kumar, additional director general of police (traffic and road safety), Karnataka. The crackdown has extended across the state, with approximately 8,000 vehicles booked in just over a week.

Alok Kumar noted that many cars and heavy vehicles like lorries, trucks, and buses use “dazzling and glaring LED headlights.” The campaign aims to lower the risk of road accidents, especially at night. Though it’s unclear if high-beam headlights directly cause accidents, they are considered a potential hazard. The Central Motor Vehicles Act provides guidelines for permissible headlight specifications, but the police have not detailed specific standards for enforcement.

Despite the crackdown, businesses selling standard LED lamps remain unaffected. A lighting specialist from Domlur emphasized the importance of responsible headlight use, advising drivers to dip their lights when driving in city limits. A Koramangala store salesman explained that warm LED lights up to 110 watts are acceptable, while white LED lights often disturb other drivers. The campaign highlights the need for drivers to be mindful of their headlight usage to ensure road safety.
