The fourth-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift, launched in the Indian market a few months ago, has quickly become a customer favorite, cementing its position as the country’s top-selling hatchback. Regularly leading the passenger vehicle sales charts, the latest iteration of the Swift introduced the new 1.2L Z12E petrol engine, replacing the previous four-cylinder K-series motor. This three-cylinder engine currently features standard idle start/stop technology, with strong hybrid capabilities speculated for future models. If equipped with a larger battery pack and a range extender, the fuel efficiency could surpass 35 km/l.
Recently, a test mule of the Swift was spotted in Bengaluru, showcasing a Hybrid badge on the rear and no camouflage, hinting at potential upgrades. Globally, the Swift is available with two engine options—a 1.2L petrol and a 1.2L petrol-hybrid—paired with either a five-speed manual or a CVT gearbox. It also offers FWD and 4WD configurations. The hybrid version’s performance abroad closely matches that of the Indian variant, and the prototype spotted could be testing ADAS features tailored to Indian driving conditions.
In related news, Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch the e Vitara, its highly anticipated electric SUV, which will debut at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi this January. Market availability is expected by March 2025, with global rollouts planned for mid-year. This five-seater midsize EV will compete in a hotly contested segment, facing rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV, Honda Elevate EV, Citroen Basalt EV, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra XUV400, and a new entrant from Mahindra’s BE series set to debut on November 26.
