Maruti has launched the much-anticipated replacement for the Gypsy in India, known as the Jimny. The starting price for the Jimny is Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom), and bookings have been open since the Auto Expo 2023 for a token amount of Rs 25,000. Deliveries of the vehicle have begun from the date of its launch. The Maruti Jimny is available in two variants, Alpha and Zeta, and comes in a five-door format.
It is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 105PS and 134Nm of torque. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed torque converter automatic. The Jimny boasts a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 16.94kmpl. As a true off-roader, it comes with 4X4 capability, a low-range gearbox, and a brake-limited slip differential. Its ladder frame chassis enhances its ability to conquer various terrains.
In terms of features, the Jimny offers LED headlamps with washers, a 9-inch touchscreen system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, push-button start-stop, cruise control, and automatic air conditioning. Safety features include six airbags, ESP, hill start assist, hill descent control, and a rear camera.

The Mahindra Thar, a prime competitor, is available with both petrol and diesel engines and offers a convertible soft top roof. Another alternative is the Force Gurkha, which is exclusively offered with a diesel-manual combination. However, within this price range, buyers may consider the Jimny as a more rugged option compared to subcompact SUVs.
