The Maruti Suzuki Fronx, a well-known sub-4m crossover in India, has been recently spotted in an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) variant, leading to speculation about a potential launch. Built on the Baleno platform, the Fronx has enjoyed strong sales in India and even has a Toyota counterpart known as the Taisor. A spy shot by automotive enthusiast Kartikey Bansal shows the Fronx ADAS variant under testing in India, featuring red temporary Haryana registration plates, some camouflage, and a front-mounted radar sensor indicating the presence of ADAS technology.
This ADAS system in the Fronx variant uses a radar-based sensor paired with a camera to monitor the road and detect obstacles like vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and other objects. This technology is similar to what is expected in Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming eVX model. Currently, Maruti Suzuki does not offer ADAS in any of its vehicles in India, including those sourced from Toyota, such as the flagship Invicto. The testing of ADAS on a more affordable model like the Fronx suggests that Maruti Suzuki is making strides in enhancing vehicle safety, which could be a significant development for the brand.
However, there is also speculation that the Fronx ADAS variant being tested could be an export-spec model rather than an India-spec version. Maruti Suzuki has already started exporting the Fronx to Japan, where safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) are mandatory. The test mule in India closely resembles the Japan-spec Fronx, raising questions about whether this ADAS-equipped variant will be available domestically. Despite this, the introduction of ADAS in the Fronx would mark a significant step forward for Maruti Suzuki in improving its safety offerings in India, where the brand has previously been criticized for lower safety ratings. The Fronx is currently available in India with a 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.0L turbo petrol unit, with rumors of a 1.2L strong hybrid engine being included in a future facelift. However, the launch of the Fronx ADAS variant in India remains unconfirmed.
