Honda Motorcycles has reportedly filed a patent for a novel airbag system, distinct from the one presently used on the Honda Goldwing Tourer. Unlike the current rider protection system tailored for large motorcycles like the Goldwing, the new airbag system is versatile, suitable for various segments, including naked streetfighters. Patent images depict the system mounted on the rear section of the fuel tank, featuring a unique ‘W’ design.
Equipped with sensors, the airbags deploy in a crash, with the central part of the ‘W’ providing chest protection, and the outer limbs extending under the rider’s arms to the back for additional side protection. Once deployed, the airbag detaches from the motorcycle, seals itself to maintain inflation, and stays wrapped around the rider even if ejected from the bike.
Although the patent introduces an intriguing concept, its production implementation remains uncertain until confirmed by Honda.
