Government to ban diesel and petrol cars in India : check details

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Wednesday that the government aims to phase out diesel and petrol vehicles within the next decade. Speaking at a public rally in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Gadkari emphasized the benefits of electric vehicles, stating, “I want to eliminate diesel and petrol vehicles from this country within 10 years. Nowadays, electric scooters, cars, and buses are available. While you spend Rs 100 on diesel, they consume electricity worth Rs 4.”

India has seen a steady rise in electric vehicle adoption, with significant sales growth reported between April 2023 and April 2024, according to the Vahan portal. Gadkari highlighted Himachal Pradesh’s hydro-power potential, suggesting it could enhance the state’s transportation infrastructure. He mentioned, “I had told Jai Ram Thakur that we will build all ropeways if you provide electricity for Rs 3. Then, we will bring private players to build ropeways and cable cars worth Rs 20 thousand crores.”

The Bijli Mahadev ropeway, inaugurated by Gadkari in March, is a significant project set to provide year-round access to the holy Bijli Mahadev temple. The 2.8-km ropeway will accommodate up to 36,000 pilgrims daily and is expected to be completed by July 2026, at a cost of over Rs 270 crore. Gadkari reiterated the BJP’s commitment to development and economic growth, stating, “In these 10 years, we have not only made promises but have done every work. We want to make India a 5 trillion dollar economy.” He spoke at the rally in support of BJP Lok Sabha candidate and actress Kangana Ranaut, with elections in Himachal Pradesh scheduled for June 1, and results to be announced on June 4, 2024.
