Driving License applicants can take tests from private driving centres from June 1

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has introduced new regulations for obtaining a driver’s license, set to take effect on June 1, 2024. Under these new rules, applicants will be able to take their driving tests at privately operated driver training centres instead of the traditional Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). Applications for a driver’s license can be submitted online via the Parivahan website or in person at local RTOs, with fees varying based on the type of license.

Successful candidates at these private training centres will receive a certificate upon passing the test. However, they must still visit the RTO to submit necessary documents and demonstrate their driving skills. In an effort to streamline the process, the government has reduced the number of required documents for new license applications.

Private driving schools will need to adhere to specific guidelines set by the government. These training centres must have at least one acre of land, expanding to two acres for 4-wheeler training. Additionally, they must provide appropriate training facilities, and their trainers are required to have a high school diploma and a minimum of five years of driving experience.
