Maruti Suzuki India Limited, formerly known as Maruti Udyog Limited, is a subsidiary of the Japanese automotive manufacturer Suzuki. It was founded and owned by the Government of India between 1981 until 2003. It was sold to Suzuki Motor Corporation by Government of India in 2003. As of July 2018, it had a market share of 53 percent in the Indian passenger car market.

1.Maruti Udyog Limited was incorporated in 1981 but the production began only during 1983. The main objective of the company was to develop a car which will cater needs of a common man.

3.Just three years after the original car was launched, the company replaced the original SS80 with an all-new car.

4.The keys to a special little car, the first Maruti 800, were handed over to Harpal Singh(ex-English Footballer) by the Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

5.In just two years after Maruti Udyog Limited started manufacturing cars, the passenger car increased tow fold, growing from about40,000 units to over 1 lakh cars per year.

6.In 1997, 8 out of every 10 vehicles sold in India belonged to Maruti.
